Sonnet 18 - William Shakespeare
William Shakespeare's Sonnet 18: Beautiful, technically stunning, but ambiguously unromantic, a love type poem on the superiority and inferiority of beauty. Who is mightier, the incarnation of Summer in May, or the perfect self-knowing immortal words of the poet; so it proved Shakespeare nil - life won. This is the work of a great poet on a great sub-structure. He says 'lease hath' not leaves in line 4, so probably she charges by the hour, this would balance the echos of her unworthiness etched into the phrasing in lines 10-14 including the puns host/ow'st, grossed/grow'st etc along with possession... fair/fare, giving a whole different context to "Thou 'art'" roughly shaking 'the darling buds' & you thought it was sweet - which it is! [Wikipedia suggests it is about a man, I am not sure this is right based on the words used although host is the masculine form - but as it is not the actual word used, I think they are getting carried away. I suppose darling buds could refer to male nipples - I think this is less likely; interestingly, Wikipedia ignores any direct sexual or financial implications despite their writ running through the core of the lines suggesting an esoteric alternative via Ovid based on the cost of life. Do such academics ever get out?]
